Before the dream becomes a commitment
A cheap house.
But are you ready
to buy it?

How ready are you?
Seven honest questions to help you see whether you’re ready to take the next step, or need more preparation first.
Possibility is the beginning
The listing shows the price.
It doesn’t show your readiness.
A low asking price can make the decision feel simple. But a purchase also involves your reasons for buying, the money behind your plans, and the realities of an older home.
Work through the checklist honestly. You may be closer to taking the next step than you think, or discover that now is the time to prepare, rather than purchase.
The purpose behind the purchase
Connect the excitement of a listing with your reasons for buying and the everyday life you imagine.
The financial picture
Reflect on funding the purchase and the expenses that come with owning an older home.
The practical commitment
Think about property condition, intended use, and the importance of seeing what you are buying.

Meet the person behind the checklist
A dream worth preparing for.
Our founder, Yuko, has bought property in both Japan and the U.S. Even as a native Japanese speaker, she experienced how unfamiliar the buying process in Japan can feel.
We created this checklist from that firsthand experience to help you pause, prepare, and see what deserves more thought before you commit.

A few common questions
Buying a home and living in Japan.
Can overseas buyers purchase a home in Japan?
Generally, yes. Foreign nationals can generally purchase residential property in Japan. Your ability to fund a purchase and the requirements for a particular property still need to be checked.
Do I need a visa or have to relocate to own a home?
Japanese residency is generally not required simply to own a home. You can own property while living overseas.
Does buying a home give me the right to live in Japan?
No. Property ownership does not itself grant a visa or residency. Your ability to enter and stay in Japan is a separate matter.
Keep the dream.
Give it a reality check.
